Moving from California to New Jersey with my Macan EV 4s. With SUMMER TIRES. Will I be OK with these in winter / snow?

The best laid plans...
So my leased 4s and I are headed to NJ (I know, plenty of opportunities for a joke or two). My car came with the Michelin summer tires.
As this car is a lease, I would prefer to not have to put bkizzaks on, but wanted to know what this group thought?
Much thanks.

I think you're screwed. Summer tires get too hard in freezing temperatures, and you'll lose almost all grip. Summer tires in freezing conditions is almost the worst case for tires (only way to make it worse would be running with slicks in snow).

You don't necessarily need to get winter tires, but you at least need to switch to all season or all weather tires.

tires are cheaper than body work - get some region/season appropriate tires - it's way better than discovering the summer tires are not up to snuff.

the handlilng differences will be minor, but they will operate in a much wider temperature range with more confidence…

I second that. Am in Jersey and would *not* drive any car on Summer tires in the Winter here, let alone a 6-figures sport car.

All season may be your best bet.

There are two kinds of summer tires, standard and performance. Dunno what the Macan gets.

Standard summer tires can handle colder NJ weather well enough. Even a little snow if you know how to drive and have the skill for it.

Most performance summer tires should not be driven in cold weather.

If you can't park the Macan in nasty weather, it is safer riding on all season tires. There are some good ones.

When I had my BMW, it came with run flats. The car was leased and I didn't really care for the run flats, so I purchased new tires and stored the original ones in my garage. When the lease was up, I just swapped the original tires back onto the car.

No, the summer tires are TERRIBLE in winter. Because of the cars weight it does better than lighter cars, but you really are going to want to get yourself a set of winter shoes for the car.

I live in Whistler (snow tires mandatory on the highway up here). How we laugh when YouTube/Insta fills up with clips of people spinning around on .5mm of snow in Vancouver (they’ve never heard of snow tires down there).

If the temperature gets below 7C where you are, at least get all season. The “Bambi on ice” look is not great in any car.

Hi to All. unfortunately I couldn’t agree more. Absolutely no summer tires in winter. Not even for snow. All you need is frozen road surface and freezing rain or sleet.

take care. Safe travels.

Suggest you get real winter tires (not all season tires which are not at all recommended in snow - just google the topic and you’ll see the difference). I live in Europe where most people switch between summer and winter tires every year.

100% agree with others, summer tires will not work in cold temps.

Another option is a dedicated winter wheel/tire set. This way you can keep your original summer wheel/tire set and just swap them when needed. I do that on my SUVs and get the best of both summer performance (21-inch set) and winter safety (20-inch set but smaller size even better).

for maximum confidence - two wheel sets and proper seasonal tires is the proper answer here - there is limited need to compromise - best tires for each season is the play.
