Drove to Napa and back; 190 miles, and show 155 miles remaining. Was worried about range because car has 22” wheels and I bought a deeply discounted 2024 macan 4 that’s been sitting on the lot forever with a fully charged battery. Is 340 miles range expected? Weather was perfect and I stayed to 70mph except for a couple big backups

Great report giving us hope that this type of range is achievable, supported by spectacular efficiency of 28.1kWh/100miles (94.9kWh usable by 28.1kWh would equal to 337 mile range). Perfect ambient temperature, and battery temperature (left tube), and regen sure helped in stop and go, but I wonder how much elevation, so hopefully you were not just gliding downhill the entire time. I made the drive to Napa from San Fran in a rental but did not pay attention to the elevation if it is all slightly downhill the entire time. Also, what is your tire pressure deviation, wonder if overinflated that may have helped it.

This was a roundtrip from Cupertino (so elevation averaged out). Tires are at ~42 as delivered.

@bgottlie oh, you give me such hope. I should be taking Delivery of my 2026 Macan 4 on April 10th at PECLA. I have over 10,000 miles of road trips planned for the next few months. I will try to collect reasonable analytics. I only expect 19 inch wheels to maximize range. But I seldom drive 70 miles an hour. 😋 Unless I’m in a 55 zone of course. 😗

I may try to get a 70 mile an hour range test in at some leg.

Thanks for the wonderful trip report.
Happy travels.

I have 22', Macan 4. The range will always be good except for extreme cold weather. Folks with 20' generally get 20 miles more.
I have driven more than 20k RWD with 20’s. Been to Spain and Italy in the summer and even to Italy in the winter. Cold weater and winter tyres are the worst but sometimes necessary combination.

I too just bought a deeply discounted 2024 Macan 4 that has been sitting on the lot a long time. This is good to see even if we aren’t planning to take it on a road trip for a little while (only had it 5 days)

There are a LOT of range tests on the Macan EV On YouTube. Just search.

IMO, this is one of the best. At around 8:57 he breaks down the results, comparing constant driving at 70mph vs 80 mph. Speed matters a LOT in determining your range. In this example, a 10 mph lower speed gave him nearly 60 miles more range:

Hilly, or not, a roundtrip will average the range out, so it really doesn’t matter. Size of tire, and tire pressure do matter, but NOT a dominant factor. Speed and outside temperature are the biggest determining factors of your range. I have a 2025 4S and have an around town range, even in the Winter months, of >310 miles. But I won’t get that in the Winter traveling >70mph. I’ve found the range to be noticeably better than the EPA results.

The aerodynamic drag force on a car is proportional to V^2, while the power to overcome that drag force scales as v^3 (v is the car’s velocity). So, higher velocities have a huge impact on your efficiency.

@MacanEVOwner I also appreciate Tom Moloughney’s content both on range tests and especially on L2 chargers.

I agree that you get 60 miles more range going at 70 versus 80 miles an hour in his test, but his point was that if you have a fast charging electric vehicle, then you can compensate for that reduced range with improved travel time. A lot of other vehicles out there do not have the charging curve that would promote this and you do need to hyper mile. He showed similar results with the Porsche Taycan. Of course there are a few roads that 80 miles an hour is actually legal on in the United States🫣. However, it is also true that attempting to go only the speed limit on many roads in the United States is dangerous as well. 😎

I think he had two points: (1) higher speeds are a significant range killer - and it was nice that he quantified it for the Macan, showing that just a 10 mph difference at those speeds, has a huge impact on range; and (2) The faster charging macan, can be a time compensator on trips, with the caveat that not all fast chargers are capable of delivering the max charge that the Macan can handle…and in addition, through much of the country, fast chargers can be sparce….so often, you end charging where you can. The NJ Turnpike is not one of those areas.

I think the “holly grail” that all EV manufacturers are pushing towards, is: Make a vehicle that has the range of an ICE, with fill-up times as comparable to an ICE. While things are getting better, neither metric is that important for me, and the way I use my EV 99% of the time; i.e., I’m a short trip/commute person who charges at home. For longer trips…often to the mountains and beaches, where chargers can still be scarce….I prefer to take my ICE…but that is only a few times per year/ .

I would add that for many EV owners - we charge at home. Charging at night, when electrical rates are the lowest (i.e., I can only smile every-time I drive by a gas station these days and prices keep going up and up)….. a huge reason why many love their EV’s. So speed of charging is really not a critical factor for many.

Oh, and forgot to mention (from another thread on battery degradation) ….one of the greatest “stresses“ you can put on your EV battery is by using fast chargers on a regular basis. I believe it’s the #1 reason sited for battery SoC) degradation. Not saying it’s a battery killer, but for those doing all they can to preserve the health of their battery, for as long as they can….stick to home charging, and that includes just using the 120v charger.

Just my two cents.

At 70 MPH with perfect weather, yes, 340 is plausible.

In summer weather, we get from our home north of Denver to Grand Junction (270 miles) from 100% to around 15%, averaging 70-75 MPH. But only when warm. Anything under 50F and we have to stop and charge.

Below 50F, it drops significantly. Or pushing 80 MPH. Or in a headwind. We just drove home from Oklahoma yesterday (624 miles). Heavy headwinds, 46F temps. Only got 1.7 MPK on 2 legs (<200 miles of range at 78 MPH). 2.1 to 2.4 most of the rest of the way. Night and day.
