Hi All,

Noticed this just today after giving the car a good clean on the passenger side door here in the UK.

I thought it was dirt, but it's smooth and feels to be under the paint but surely can't be?

It almost looks like liquid trail that has gone behind the plastic trim.

Anyone any ideas and how to get rid of?

Cheers.

Did you try one off those automobile paint solvent cleaners?

Try WD-40, it's a pretty good solvent for anything sticky.

Another possibility is that it's from water with iron particles, maybe from parking in a garage where rusty water dripped onto the paint. It's not from the car since the body panels are aluminum. If it's that use Iron-X which is typically used to remove brake dust and rail dust (from when cars are transported by rail car). Using it won't hurt the paint.

Only some scratch x which didn't seem to make any difference. Any recommendations?
As a gentle start, try some clay bar and quick detailer. Too much pressure might smear it around, so go easy. Look for "Meguiar's Clay Bar Kit with 3 Pack Clay Bars and Microfiber Towel for Auto Detailing - Smooth Surface Car Clay Bar Kit" or similar.

I think tree sap is a likely candidate.

Use as little to none of elbow grease. You will damage your paint. I would bring it to a professional detailing shop and have them work on it.

At minimum they can advise or recommend who they would use for ceramic coating, paint correction, and other paint work if outside the dealership.

Looking at the lip along the bottom, there seems to be an accumulation of brown shade there, too, although fainter.
Is there something running off that collects there? Tree sap or something?

Agree - looks to be tree sap, but never had this on any of my other cars, it appears to be smooth and under the paint which is odd - I would have thought tree sap is sticky unless someone it got absorbed in the paint. I'll probably add it to the snag list.

1. First - try water on a microfiber. Water won't hurt anything - nor will the microfiber.
2. If that doesn't work - try a solvent that is a bit more aggressive. I'm in the US and you're in the UK so products likely aren't the same - but - in the US 3M makes a spray adhesive remover that is outstanding for removing stains, etc. I'd try that after water.
3. If that doesn't work - I'd go to a more aggressive solvent. Acetone is your friend here. Yes - it's fairly aggressive - but it won't "remove/dissolve" factory paint. Try a small amount on a microfiber towel.
4. If that doesn't work you'll likely have to polish it off - a variety of polishes are available and if you know how to do machine polishing this will likely easily be removed. Try something non-aggressive first and proceed to a more aggressive polish if needed. If you don't know what you're doing - and be honest about this - seek professional help.
5. If this doesn't work seek professional help. IF you know what you're doing you're now at the point where you would use wet sanding with 1500-2000-3000 then polish to a good finish. Unless you know what you're doing this is best left to the professionals. Sand through the clearcoat and you are certainly in a world of hurt.

Thanks for this, I just realised that my car has the gardx ceramic coating on so I wonder if this is the problem - I've never had this on previous cars and never seen this problem before. Maybe the sap has got under the coating somehow?
