Thought it would be a good idea to install the Porsche Dashcam in the car and thus the App as well. It has been a nightmare as yet unresolved. I live in an area of poor phone signal which means the Porsche App sometimes gives me accurate information and sometimes it doesn’t - I have gotten used to that! However I have been told that the reason I cannot connect my phone to the dashcam is that my phone is connected to the car (Appleplay) and I have to disconnect the phone from the car to obtain a connection. I’ve tried this and it still will not work so am booked in with the main dealer next week. They will probably be able to connect it but after this I will have to disconnect the phone from the car to connect to the dashcam every time. Can this be correct? Would be grateful if anyone has further information to try and resolve this. Many thanks…

Correct: you cannot have the phone connected to the car *and* the dashcam at the same time: it’s one or the other.

It’s the case with most dashcams too - several threads cover this issue.

Many thanks for that - do you know if you can play the dashcam’s recorded footage by removing the card and playing it your computer?

Yes you can. I suggest buying a micro SD / type C (or whatever USB port your phone has) reader off Amazon for $10 and keep it in your car as well in case you need to pull a recording and you can't connect to the dashcam's WIFI.

Yeah, the Porsche dashcam is a bloody terrible thing to set up. If you are using an iPhone, be aware that you need to disable mobile data first for the Porsche dashcam app otherwise you’ll get stuck in a loop where it won’t connect. That one thing had me cursing for hours. Only worked it out when my iPad (with no SIM card) would connect quite happily but my iPhone refused to.

Now that it’s working reliably, I do like that it just does its thing and also the radar function front and back in park mode. That said, I did mute the announcements each time you started up - what accent is that voice anyway?!?

Also note that I think it might be limited to micro SD cards up to 256gb. Bought a 512 but it wouldn’t work

I just wonder why is it not possible to write a program that uses the car’s own cameras to record and monitor, just like other cars do?

Right now there are only a few cars that do that (Tesla, maybe Rivian?).

I'm sure it's possible, but Porsche just hasn't decided to do that yet. It could be that the data connection between the ADAS and the infotainment system doesn't have enough bandwidth to support it.

When I configured my Macan 4EV, I added the setup for dash cam for an additional cost. I was under the impression that it would be aftermarket later. I've yet to add the dash cam and not quite sure how to go about it. My granddaughter was just assaulted, and injured, in a road rage incident, so I'm feeling more motivated to get it done. Appreciate how to advise and recommendations on the best camera. Is front and back a good idea? Thank you.

I did the same...The Porsche Dashcam is good looking (what a surprise!) and has excellent quality videos front and back. However it's a pain to use until you get things sorted especially with an Apple phone.

I have the Porsche dashcam. The dashcam and app itself is average... I have Garmin and VIOFO dashcams on my other car and frankly, they all kind of suck.

If cost value is the most important to you, don't get it. The dashcam costs 130 USD or whatever for the pre-wiring. Another 500 USD for the unit and then for me costed $1300 to get it installed at a Porsche dealer. If you haven't ordered your Macan yet, it would be worth it to try to get it installed complimentary as part of the purchase deal.

I personally like it because it means no one is going to pull up the trims and run wiring down to the fuse box and also since it's dealer installed, if there's an issue it's their problem and not mine. But it's overpriced as hell if you're paying for the installation so it is what it is.

In the UK the prewiring for the dashcams is standard. I have a Porsche, one as I was told by UK Customer Diservice that if I had another one installed by others, if there were any future electrical issues the warranty may be voided. I decided it was easier to get the dealer fix.
There are a number of posts on here where owners have had non-Porsche dashcams fitted without issues. Other posts cover the potential problems with CarPlay if you use the cars WiFi with the dashcam App. I found the installation to be superb and the camera is out of my line of sight.
I haven’t bothered to take the card out and view footage as to date I haven’t come across anything of interest.
It is on whilst parked so can capture any nudges or the like. When you get in it announces it is turning off - it means from parking and then turns on when you drive away.

BMW has this on some models but it is quite slow and clunky, and the car cameras are not super high resolution (I don’t think any car has 4k built in cams).

I should clarify that there is no Sentry mode but it will record a crash or any 30 second clip if you press the camera button, and records all cameras. It uses an old format like mpeg2 or something that results in huge files.
