What's the source of the heater?

I assumed since there's no engine, an EV will generate heat right away when you turn on the heater but it took like 5 minutes of driving before I sensed warmer air coming in. Was hoping a benefit would be no longer having to wait for a warm engine but is this not the case with EVs?

We have Rivain R1T and Volvo C40 both EV's both get warm right away when you turn them on. But our new 2024 Macan 4 EV takes forever to warm up too. Not an EV thing but a Porsche thing I am afraid from my experience. We took it into the service department and they said it is normal!

It's the heat pump (AC compressor in reverse)

So if the outside is below freezing it can take some bit of time to get fully up to temperature, I would say no more than 1 minute though on mine - 5 minutes seems excessive!

It was in the low 50s. ACs can generate cold air very quickly, since it's just reversing, shouldn't the hot air also get generated quickly?

Two thoughts Heating and cooling with a heat pump may not have the same efficiencies. It is not a simple reversal of the process. The other issue is the temperature change you are requesting from your system. We have heat pumps in our house and in the summer they are asked to cool the air from 90F to 77F, a difference of 13F. In the winter they are asked to heat air from 40F to 70F, a 30F difference. Our electrical bills are higher in the coldest months.
As to Rivian R1T’s, I believe from googling that, like my 2020 MS, they do not use heat pumps for heating but use simple resistive heating, which is instantaneous but very inefficient. The Volvo C40 may depend on year and options from what I can find.

Are you turning the fan up? If so dont, leave it low until you feel some heat, then turn the fan up a little.

When it's in the 40s and 50s here, it gets warm enough in the first minute.
For window defrost, it's almost instant.
I still use the seat and steering wheel warmer as the faster comfort, though!

Not entirely certain that's correct.

All EVs have an HV (high voltage) heater and country dependent will have a heat pump as standard.

The purpose of the heat pump is generally to redirect waste heat from the battery to the interior as part of the efficiency and not the primary source of cabin heating.

The Taycan cabin heated very quickly but also suffered quality issues with the HV heater leading to many failures.

Sounds to me that the experienced behaviour is not normal unless running in ECO mode or Porsche have dialled things back.

Yeah, I'm not impressed with the Macan's climate system. It's much worse than our Mach-E's. Takes much longer to heat the car up. Then blows hard when I don't want it too (which is noisy as hell). Can't get the 2nd row climate controls to stay off each time we get in the car either. Always seems to (noisily) come on next time we get in the car.

I didn't expect our Ford to be better than our Porsche, but for a surprising number of things like this, it is.

Same experience here... my 2015 model s had instant heat (one of the few things it did well) but my 4s takes several minutes (similar to cabin heat in an ICE vehicle). As noted heated seats and wheel help, also trying to use scheduled preconditioning and remembering to use the app when away from shore power...

The heated seats do help to compensate & are very battery friendly.
For 100 grand we really shouldn't have to "compensate" though. That's the annoying part about it. The expectation is higher, but it's actually worse than many $35k cars (or $50k EVs).

True... my guess is that it was a choice made by porsche (range over comfort) & "should" be fixable with a software update
