I selected compass (and altitude) as two of the 4 custom display items on the right instrument cluster gauge. However, the compass becomes unavailable whenever Carplay navigation starts (using either Google or Apple Maps), and available again as soon as Carplay navigation is stopped.

Does anyone else experience this?

P.S. For those who have the physical compass on the dash, does it work normally during Carplay navigation?

Thank you!

How do you configure the custom display for the instrument cluster?

Is the compass only available if you have it installed in the center of the dash?

somewhere in the car menu, you can select for each of the 4 lines what you want: compass, altitude, Little battery voltage and so on, instead of the default selection (which includes the name of the phone carrier, totally useless IMO)

Yeah, it's also been like this for me since the beginning, which makes it pretty much useless since I almost always have Carplay navigation on..

My main question now is whether it's the same with the physical compass on the dash? If that's working during Carplay navigation, I'm tempted to swap the sport chrono with a compass..

Thanks - I found it. I will check to see if it is available with CarPlay and let you know.

I have the same problem, except:
1. android auto
2. it works about 50% of the time

It's been in the shop once for it, and they couldn't reproduce it. I bet they weren't using Android Auto, but I *think* it has happened also without?

Speaking of that customized panel -- why can't I put "duration of trip so far" as one of the items? I know it's on another one of the panels, but I want exactly the four things I care about on this panel. Grrr. Almost as annoying as "the pause button actually just mutes," but not quite.

No, i'ts not the same as with the physical compass, nor the digital version of the compass in the central and passenger screens.

I'm also tempted to make the swap: the best of both worlds, all the chrono sport packages customizations, and the physical compass which is nicer than the chrono IMO.

So far the compass has shown up about 50% of the time for me with CarPlay running.
To me, it's about whether you have an active navigation in Carplay. The compass works fine when carplay is on. But it stops working as soon as I start a navigation in Google or Apple Maps.

This is my experience also. If CarPlay is being used for navigation, then neither compass nor elevation show up in the IC (and if I remember correctly, compass also doesn't show in HUD if configured to be there.) I'm not sure I'd call this a glitch; as to whether it has to be that way or it's something that could be corrected, I have no idea.

All the data on direction, altitude, and location comes from the car's built-in GPS and accelerometer. Your phone does all of those things itself as well. No problem when those two things are operating independently.

But when you connect the two by activating phone navigation to display on the dash/HUD, your phone GPS overrides the car's GPS. And unfortunately there is no standardized way for a car to request compass or altitude data from a phone. This is the same reason you can't run built-in navigation and AA/Carplay navigation simultaneously. Only one or the other can provide active route guidance at a time.

It's kinda like switching inputs on a TV. When you go from HDMI1 to HDMI2, you no longer see or hear anything from HDMI1, even if it's still playing.

I thought it was that the phone’s navigation takes ownership of the car’s GPS, and it can only be associated one thing at a time. So then the car’s PCM no longer receives data from the GPS module.

It can be GPS or just the antenna. It's still the phone GPS module in control--there's no way to turn it off. CarPlay/AA take over the GPS antenna in the car to improve accuracy and signal lock and feed the data to the phone GPS, which then renders it incapable of sending data to the in-car module.

But if you turn off location services on your phone, the phone navigation will fail and your car GPS will blink back in. And if the car's GPS is functioning, then the data would be available on the bus for other apps like the instrument gauges to use.
