At 35 kWh/100mi the break even price for road tripping in the Macan is around 10x the charging cost per kWh. EA regularly around $0.65, would require gas prices to be around $6.80 to break even on trip fuel costs. IONNA averaged (3 GA locations) $0.35 on a recent 1000 mile round trip drive. With gas prices at a conservative $4.10 average, at the time, this is a 10% fuel cost savings over a 30 mpg car.

We’ve road tripped our Macan several times, and this was by far the best experience. Usually we are waiting for slower charging EV’s to vacate a space only to then charge at ~100 kW. With IONNA, the stops were in convenient locations and plenty of chargers available. Rechargery locations were the most convenient with clean, secure restrooms onsite. Also, you got to love the retro aesthetic!

We're coming up on the 1 year mark of owning our Macan, which means the end of our free year of EA. I figure we've gotten about $3000 out of the perk. We road trip a LOT (about 20,000 miles in the last 12 months).

Starting with the next trip, I'm gonna have a whole new charging plan. Ionna will be 1st priority where it exists. Then I'm gonna have to check station prices between EA and SC each time to see which is the better option for the rest. It's gonna feel weird not simply targeting EA 90% of the time (as we also did for 5 years prior to the Macan with our our Mach-E).

Another option coming on strong is Walmart. They're installing the same Alpitronic units Ionna uses, and pricing looks comparable. Unfortunately they seem focused mostly on urban charging right now which is little help to us on road trips, but hopefully they work their way out to the smaller cities/towns, many of which have Walmart stores.

Used Ionna over the holiday weekend, cost $14. They were having a special at $0.19 per kWh, didn’t realize it until I was charging. I just chose Ionna because I was interested in trying it out.

We had that exact experience. Two cross country road trips targeting EA due to free charging, 14,000 miles or so in year 1.

Two weeks ago we charged at the Mercedes NA headquarters in Atlanta for cheaper than EA, I think $0.54, and it was the same model as an IONNA Rechargery, with a Mercedes color scheme and vibe. I might use Mercedes network before EA, and more Buc-ees are adding Mercedes chargers

I still have another 6 months of free EA charging left. It's good to know there is a better alternative once my free charging expires. I do most of my charging at home and only take five or six trips a year where I need to fast charge. I would argue that 20 mpg is a more realistic number if you are comparing to a gas Macan with similar performance specs. Outside of road trips, the operating costs are a lot less than an ICE vehicle.
