My first EV was a 2022 Polestar 2 (P2), with performance pack. Still have it, still love it. Chinese made, with Swedish design. Other than the usual EV-related software glitches, the Polestar has been extremely reliable for me. Pretty much all the software updates from Polestar are OTA. Currently looking at the P4, as a replacement for my last ICE car.

I also own a 2025 Macan S EV and a 2013 Lexus RX350 (ICE). The Macan EV has had a number of software glitches, but as an EV owner, this did not alarm me. Overall, very enjoyable car to own, although reliability is not top of the charts, IMO. The Lexus has been bullet proof. Boring, but bulletproof.

I have the Lexus RX 350 as well. It’s 10 years old now. Other than rust inside the handles and staining my white car it has been pretty solid. There has been some electrical glitches during very cold winters in the last couple of years though. Like the screen would go black and takes a long time to restart.

The Macan has been a joy to drive I have to admit, when comparing it to all the previous SUVs I have owned. Now that Chinese EVs may be coming to the Canadian market, I am looking forward to trying out a BYD once they figure out logistics and maintenance. Then I will replace the RX350 with a Chinese EV. May consider the Polestar too. However, I’m sure value wise, the BYD will look more attractive

The p2 (I believe) is only made in China…but the P4 is mainly made in Korea, while the P3 (larger car) is made in the US.

I think many people outside of Asia, will be very surprised by how well Chinese cars/brands are made. They don’t have the history like Japanese car manufacturers for reliability….but it’s coming, if not already here. Then there’s the reality that value wise, I don’t see any other country being able to match the value (e.g., quality/price) that the Chinese can offer. The issue will be (for a while) - the lack of service points/dealerships from a Chinese brand.

Are you speaking from experience of driving a BYD?

I have only sat in them during my trip in China, never drove one, but judging by how technologically advanced China is vs the rest of the world, I can’t imagine them being that bad. Plus their new battery which has insane range and fast charging will definitely look very attractive as a second car that my husband will be driving. He’s less of a driving enthusiast and doesn’t care what car he drives. I think the quality of Chinese cars nowadays are actually very good.

I would also add that in China, the consumer has MANY EV options. Many. And that’s understandable as over 50% of all new car sales in China in 2026 are EV’s.

If a EV brand has poor reliability or poorly made, or over priced….I assure you that the Chinese buyer has plenty of other options to choose from. China has a LOT of smart consumers, that closely scrutinize how their Yuan is spent.

If you watch any reviews of journalists' Chinese cars, they all say no matter how good they are in all other aspects but as far as enjoyment of driving dynamics are concerned, there is nothing to write home about.
No match to European contenders like Porsche EVs (or even BMW for that matter).
The only car that has come closest in that respect, to some extent, is from Xiaomi.

I was on vacation in China just two weeks ago, and BYD cars were everywhere! I was also surprised at how luxurious a BYD taxi was. Not only was I blown away at China's super advanced cities, but also at their efficiency with everything! Trains are always on time. Food delivery were fast and has a cool factor with their robots at the hotel, and food was so cheap. China's EVs are improving at a much faster pace than the rest of the world. They will soon surpass all the traditional manufacturers, and I for one am looking forward to buying one in Canada when it becomes available. The competition in China is so fierce that their only option is to make things better and improve their products so that they can stay afloat. BYD is very popular in Europe, and I can see why. They're the biggest EV manufacturer in China, so probably the only one that will be able to expand into Canada the quickest. Vancouver and Toronto will definitely be the markets to break into. I'm in the Toronto market and Vancouver is very green conscious, so a lot of us here are excited about it.

Xiaomi is Porsche's competitor in China for sure. I would agree that in terms of driving dynamics, Chinese cars are probably not as good for now. But as an every day car for the average driver, they're very good. And as I mentioned earlier, China's competition is fierce in every aspect. Give them 5-10 years, and they'll be a force to be reckoned with.

If you are trying to compare a BYD Seal, as an example, who’s tech laden cost in the EU averages between 39-45k euro’s.…to a base Macan EV in Europe….that averages about 85k euro’s….I think you are comparing apples to oranges.

That said, I’ve seen many reviews and comparisons between the various Chinese EV’s and other European/American EV’s.…and like most comparisons, some Chinese EV’s do better, while some are rated worse than other brands from Europe. It all depends what are the buyers priorities?
