It sure would be handy to have the 'joker' button, aka the quick access button to have more than one capability rather than choosing one option. Two presses, or even three for different purposes. Hey if an iPhone can do it...

years ago @ porsche track event in europe - lunch with some porsche engineers - this was discussed - it's very difficult to get that sort of behavior past automotive regulations - steering wheels and their interactions are tightly regulated - a manufacturer has to be willing to go to bat and argue their points if there is any disagreement between them and various regulations and the individuals who interpret and enforce the regulations…

all of the engineers at the lunch table agreed that this sort of design goal was not something Porsche would be willing to "go to bat for and argue" - simply not how they are going to spend their time…also during high performance driving with bumps, braking, turnning accidential inputs are common - accidential double-tap inputs are even more of an issue…

it was simply something that horrified every engineer at the table in terms of actually getting that sort of thing approved world wide in the high regulated automotive market…

they all use desktop computer/laptop with mice/track pads and use both double click and triple click actions in their everyday jobs and are deeply familiar with this as an interaction design paradigm…there's a reason they don't do on their interaction designs for automotive systems…

my $0.02 YMMV - it was discussed - it was rejected - and internally at Porsche they simply have choosen to not engage on this as a design goal.

I wouldn't hold my breath.

Thanks for the info- that makes sense. The button below for advancing a music track is in my opinion the most under used button, they could turn that into a second hot button with one of the options a track advance. But they won't.

The solution for accidentally touching/bumping is also there on the current single click so that is not the excuse.
It would be very cool and handy to have a second option behind the button after a 2sec press for example. Should also be easy to program actually.
It also annoys me that we can skip a track forward but not back. And I now use the Diamond button to disable the warnings which I do every time I get in so not want to change that to the screen because than I have to reach out . Luxury problems, I know.

Tangentially related but the most egregiously unhelpful button is pressing in the left scroll wheel. Why would it only mute and not pause music??!

It's the first car I've ever had that has decided that people might want music to continue playing in silence when I click a button and not just pause it. So stupid.

I don't think I've ever had a car that did that. The volume controls have only controlled volume (UP-DOWN-MUTE). The PLAY-PAUSE-FWD-BKWD controls have always been separate from the volume controls.

Perhaps they could program that button specially to first look and see whether the audio source is live antenna (non-pausable) vs streaming (pausable) and have it perform a different function for each? Just don't think I've ever seen that. The main purpose of the button is to simply turn the volume off quickly when you need to hear something else.

BMW had this nailed with their shortcut keys that looked like radio pre-set buttons but could actually be coded to short cut to, say, CarPlay, tone controls, tyre pressures, speed dial to a particular phone number - or even as a radio preset :CWL:

but they got rid of them in the last couple of iDrive updates. Shame.

My MINI has 6 custom button but then again it's a proper car none of this poverty spec Macans.
In addition it has Previous and Next track buttons like every other car known to man/woman. Porsche cost cutting is next level, I bet the German who discovered this retired to Monaco the next day.

Yeah -- in a modern streaming world, "mute" is a relic. It made sense on old broadcast systems where you couldn't just pause/stop the material, but that world went away 20 years ago...

Every car I've had, the functions have been volume up/down and pause/play. This is the first car where it doesn't, and it drives me bonkers having to look at the screen and then find the right location of the pause button. Absolutely insane.

Separately, this is also the first car where turning it off / walking away / exiting will not stop media playback. Same phone, all other cars, when I turn off or exit, the car will send the "pause" command before disconnecting. This car, not so.

I'm surprised the audio doesn't shut off when you walk away. When I park I don't use the on/off button, I just put it in park. When I open the door everything just stops. Walk away and the car locks.

E.g. Audi’s volume roll on the wheel works like that. Pressing it pauses the music.

Imagine my surprise when Macan didn’t work like that.

Same here, music stops when opening the door.
