These driving assistance systems have a long way to go before you can rely on them. It reminds me of the early days of ABS - until the bugs go worked out, many distrusted it and still pumped the brakes. Now everyone assume ABS etc will do its job far better than they can. Can you imagine having to reboot your ABS? Personally I hope these systems reach maturity over the next 10 yrs - In 10 yrs I’ll be at an age where I’ll want autonomous driving most of the time. Hopefully I’ll still be able to enjoy my 3 peddle cars ( 1 without ABS) at that point also. I enjoy being an early adopter and a curmudgeon with my cars. Love the engineering in all them - it’s like a time capsule!

I have yet to try self park but I have managed to get curb rash all on my own.:crying: The good news, my local dealer (Rusnak, Pasadena) was able to buff out and repaint my 22" sport rims for $50.
Really $50 , I need to start going to Pasadena dealership.

Yep $50.
I tried to enter a narrow alley from a busy street, rushed my turn cutting the curb to close, took a chunk out of my right rear sidewall and ground the rim.
Replaced the tire and worried I’d have to buy a new rim $$$, but the service crew repaired perfectly.

Lane keeping, sign recognition, and adaptive cruise control was there on my wife's 10 year old Volvo.
All the OEMs, except for Tesla, seem to be using the same vendor, MobilEye, which has done this for a long time. The systems have gotten only marginally better over time, but they have gotten less expensive to manufacture.

I’m late to the thread, but curious if btmacan’s car has rear axis steering. With RAS you need to modify how pull out to avoid curb rash.

Yeah, I'm curious to hear how folks with rear wheel/axle steering have needed to adapt to parking, pulling out from a kerb... I can see how it might help avoid @DC Mac 's issue since the rear would step away from the kerb a little on a tight turn, but if your rear wheel is right against or even near a kerb and you apply lock to pull out, that quickly becomes a learnt 'no-no' right? I expect that reversing in that situation with the steering applied fully into the kerb would help align the car out of the space better/more quickly, so perhaps folks would do that first? Any other tips from having rear wheel steer and parking?

Also, how does Volvo get away with a turning circle of (from their documentation) of 11m on the new EX60 (quoted for the 4wheel drive model, but could well be wrong), which appears to have a longer wheelbase (2970mm) than the Macan (2893mm), and not much in it width-wise, without rear axle steering (Macan 12.1 m without rear axle steer, 11.1m with rear axle steer)... different priorities (sporty steering geo vs comfort oriented), but am surprised by the large deficit.

bingo - yes we do have rear wheel steering - I bet when my wife turned the wheel to the left lock the rear wheels turned into the curb. Would the self un-park be able to disable the rear wheel steering to prevent this or even aware that this particular car has that option?

The self parking function is aware of the rear wheel steering, it shows the vehicle trajectory in blue in the camera view and uses it if available both to get in and out of a parallel parking spot.

I think the concern about RWS causing this is exaggerated. If the car can get in and out of the parking spot without damage, so can a human.

All I'm saying is that the self parking function doesn't have some secret sauce that makes it turn off rear axle steering. And the RAS steering angle is a maximum of five degrees, unless you're practically right against the curb that isn't going to result in contact (and remember that the car didn't make contact when parking).
