I've been using Apple Maps for my navigation with my 2024 Macan 4 since the Porsche GPS was not very good and Google Maps, among other things, didn't work with the head up display. That has now changed. The latest Google Maps has been updated and improved, and, surprise surprise, the head up display works with it. Definitely worth giving it a try.

The onboard navigation is using Google Maps. What's the difference between the onboard-version and the (I assume Apple) Carplay Google Maps?

That's annoying. Didnt spec HUD as always use Google Maps.

I was surprised at how good it works. I am a long time waze advocate, so when I saw how well Google maps integrates with display, I was impressed.

The new Google Maps has a very nice, clean display with a bunch of new features. Most Porsche vehicles use the Porsche Communication Management (PCM) navigation system with Porsche’s own map data. The routing and navigation logic come from Porsche, not Google. Porsche promises to incorporate Google logic in the future, but for now, if you want to use Google logic you must use Google. Try it out. I prefer the new Google maps, especially now that HUD works with it, but you may not.

Just out of curiosity, for all of the above: since you’re using other navigation systems instead of the one in the PCM, how are you dealing with the battery not warming up when charging etc?

I agree. Anything is better than the PCM map for mapping, however, you need to point to the charger to initiate battery pre-heating and also PCM does a good job only listing supported Tesla chargers (they must be open to non-Tesla vehicles).

Modern phones are pretty efficient, I keep the phone in my pocket, use wireless android auto, and it's not particularly warm.
Also, the wireless charging shelf in the console has a little bit of A/C blowing on it, so it also keeps the phone cool if I need to charge.

Now that wireless android auto navigation shows turn directions in the HUD again (it was broken for over a month) Google Maps is good. The only thing it doesn't have, that Porsche integrated maps have, is the AR on-road animated turn indicators.

Oh, I’m sorry if I was unclear! I was referring to the charging capability in relation to battery temperature for DC charging. As I understand it, the battery won’t preheat if you’re using navigation systems other than the one in the PCM.

What are the consequences of the battery not preheating?

Never mind. I figured it out. I guess if your navigating to a charging station, which I rarely have to do, it makes sense to use the PCM navigation. Otherwise, Google navigation appears to be the way to go.

Battery pre-heat for charging isn't all that important. I haven't seen a meaningful difference in charge rate -- the "capacity sharing" of EA stations is a big charge speed killer, by comparison.

You wouldn’t happen to live in one of the warmer states, would you? For us in Scandinavia, pre-heating isn’t just important, it’s essential. Without it, you can barely charge on longer trips. Of course, in the summer it’s not nearly as critical.

I grew up in Stockholm! But, yeah, California is nice. I recommend it!

The battery does heat up when you use it, though. There's a reason we have liquid cooling in the battery pack... When you need to fast charge, you've been driving for three hours already. Also, when charging fast, the battery heats itself pretty quickly, so I don't quite understand how pre-heating would help that much.

But I don't have temperature data to back that up, so if anyone has that, I'd be super interested in seeing the real difference, especially depending on ambient temperatures!
