I’m in a bit of an ‘irresistible force meets immovable object’ situation, and wonder if anyone has had the same or can offer advice…

Porsche Sutton Coldfield have told me that my order is almost ready for collection. Now, I have the VIN via the app but the dealer tells me they won’t/can’t upload the registration number to the DVLA database until I collect the car. The SA told me that this happens all the time, and insurance companies are completely used to this situation and they commonly use the VIN.

Meanwhile, back at the insurer, they’re adamant that they won’t insure the car until the reg number is accessible to them from DVLA. The dealer has told me what the reg number will be, but they’re insistent that they can’t upload it to DVLA until I sign for the car.

So Churchill Insurance won’t insure the car till it’s accessible on the DVLA database; the dealer won’t let me take it on collection day unless I can show them a cover note proving that the car is insured. What the heck…?

One option isn’t open to me right now, which is to switch insurer. Owing to an idiot in a pick-up truck who refused to admit liability for a collision in my old car, my insurer is currently pursuing court action against his insurer - so swapping is, er, messy.

This is ridiculous - surely the dealer must have it registered and on the DVLA database before a purchaser turns up to drive a car away? I can’t help think someone somewhere is BSing me.

Feel for you…

Dealer won’t want to register the vehicle in case the deal falls through and they are stuck with a pre reg.

Insurer could insure the vehicle type and model and manually insert the reg number.

Someone will have to concede and whilst it should be the former, you may get better results with the latter.

I’m a bit different as just added mine to my fleet policy (no other verification it’s done online) and deal went via a broker.

You could use this to give yourself 5 days free very comprehensive cover to sort Churchill out - you may need to apply now to ensure you can get cover due to your existing claim. You can apply here - https://insurewithporsche.co.uk/drive-away/

If you want to see how good a deal you’ve got from Churchill get a quote from Porsche Insurance. In my case they were £ 2k more than my 2 car and house building and contents cover from Admiral just for the Macan !

I think your are encountering something not right. I bought a personal plate and so didn’t have any difficulties. But when buying previous cars from Merc I was offered a choice of reg numbers a week or so before collection. The sales guy sent me about 20 reg numbers to choose from.

Wait, what? Why on earth didn’t the SA mention this?! I’ll get on to this straight away, thank you very much for the link.

You’re welcome. I hope that solves the problem so you have an enjoyable and stress free handover.
Absolutely! Got Porsche drive-away insurance in ten minutes online over breakfast. Five days free, very easy. Mind you, they also provided a quote for annual insurance and I’m sure they ring a bell in their office if anyone is daft enough to accept it…

I would have gone to Admiral and had not heard of this issue.

Ultimately the dealer has to register the Car for collection day. You have the reg and you can post date your insurance (this is normal).

Strange, mine was very competitive. Also included some perks like GAP insurance. Must be regional.

Didn't know this exists/existed in UK as well, was used to it back in Germany to be able to kind of choose number plate. Will ask my Porsche dealer.

The selection was fairly limited. As the reg has to have the initial region letters and the number is the year it doesn’t leave much choice.

Yeah, I got a choice of five registration numbers. None of them were particularly special, but I felt constrained to avoid the ones that started ‘BJ’…
