I’ve read that more people are prone to carsickness with EVs due to their quiet nature. Adding sound to indicate changes in speed helps with that, especially when passengers aren’t looking out the window.

I’ve always left the sounds on in my EVs and you get accustomed to it, just becomes part of the car. The one time I coded it out was on an ICE, some companies have been doing this since before EVs.

It is just on or off. There is no volume adjustment.

Yes, you hear it outside. I considered that maybe this is even a part of why they charge for it, if they have to upgrade the components that create exterior sound.

When my wife is driving the Macan EV and I'm outside of the car and I hear it approach or leave, I'm always surprised at how loud the sports sound noise is. Truthfully, it has made me think about the difference in startup volume between our flat-6 engine and our Lexus RX 3.5-liter V6 engine.

I have no point-of-reference between the outside volume level of the regular noises of a non-sports-sound-equipped Macan EV compared to our sports-sound-equipped Macan EV. Our sports-sound-equipped EV sounds different and louder (to me) than the Teslas on our block. It's something I notice when I'm walking and the cars drive past me.

If you’re in Normal mode instead of Sport or Sport+, Sport Sound is off by default. That will let you compare the volume.

Note it still makes the sound at low speed. For some sort of low speed sound rule.

I'm trying to help, but there are limits to what I can do here. I can just report what I experience.

The Acoustic Vehicle Alerting System (AVAS), which is heard outside the car, is entirely separate from Sport Sound, and is mandated by regulation and cannot be disabled. On my 2024 Macan 4 EV with sport sound optioned, when I am standing outside the car, I *cannot* hear a difference when the car is in park between sports sound turned on/off; I cannot hear a difference at low speed (5 mph) with sports sound turned on or off; and, at 20 mph, I also do not notice a difference in the exterior sound between sports sound on/off.

But ... there are two other issues, and I really don't know the answer to either question (even though I own the feature):

(1) Is there an external decibel difference between a sports-sound-equipped Macan EV and a non-sports-sound-equipped Macan EV with sports sound off?

(2) Is there an external decibel difference between a sports-sound-equipped Macan EV and a non-sports-sound-equipped Macan EV with sports sound on?


*** For future people replicating this, I have the drive menu up in the center screen and the driver is just clicking the toggle between sports sound on/off and running a pass. We are not playing with normal/sport/sport+ modes AND the sport sound toggle. I guess that is another test we could run too because I have sport chrono and all of the modes.

Just got back from another test drive in a turbo. In normal mode with the sport sound off, there is still an electric motor sound that increases with acceleration. It is just more subdued and honestly feels more natural.

Honestly I commented to the salesman that the volume had gone down on the sport sound and he had to point out that it was off.

which is almost good because I like the sports sound to myself but don’t want to have people outside hear it and either bother them or know I’m zipping around in a sport mode.

Both can be heard outside of the vehicle. I have it and really like the optionality of having the deeper (and a bit louder) sports sound when I want it for sportier driving and silence when I don’t. On that later note, I honestly do NOT like hearing the “safety” sound below 20/25 mph or so, and wish I could just turn IT off. It goes away a little above that.
