With only 600 miles on the odometer, my Macon EV died the other night. Fortunately, we were in our neighborhood, and were able to walk home, but I’ve had the vehicle towed to the dealership. The warning lights came up in orange “HPM high voltage system severely limited safe to drive.“ Within 10 to 15 seconds, the dash light turned red and the warning read “electrical system fault park safely.“ The car then completely died. I turned the ignition off, left it off for about an hour, and the car started with no problem. Today, the technician tells me that the problem is likely that I left the key close to the car when I parked it each night in the garage, and that the car never fully went to sleep. That caused the draining of the 12 V battery. Does that sound rational to those of you with experience with this issue?

That does not check out. The 12V battery is supposed to charge whenever the car ignition is on, so if the car never turns off, that would keep the 12V battery from draining.
There could be some software/logic bug that eventually needs the car to deep cycle to clear up, but that has nothing to do with the battery, only with the PPE platform software.

The error you received said High Voltage so definitely not the 12v. The red could be anything but after the High Voltage error then surely likely to be High Voltage. The fact the car started after an hour after you doing nothing would indicate a software temporary issue as you did nothing to charge the 12v battery.

I think the key shuts off after a few minutes to stop the car and key ‘hunting for a signal’ but as added security I use a metal container to avoid ‘relay theft’. Ask the dealer if the key and car should sleep after say 5 mins.
