Standard operation of the charging flap for DC fast charging is to fold it down and directly connect a charging cable. When the fast charging cable is disconnected, the flap snaps back into the closed position. No worries. That is how it worked for probably 30 or more fast charges.

On my most recent trip, I decided to back a little closer to the charger after opening the charging flap. Big mistake. The car decided I was leaving and tried to close the charge port door with the flap down and the door jammed against the flap. The door would not retract and the charging flap could not be moved. Touching the rearward part of the door was not an option.

Fortunately thought of using the Goodbye screen which I’d opened the door with in the first place. That opened the door and cleared the jam. I also had my dealer on the phone who came up with the same solution shortly after. Only remaining problem was I had a charge port error in the instrument cluster that would not clear. That was remedied the next time I correctly opened and closed the charge port door.

You are unlikely to accidentally close a manual charge port, but it would probably be easily fixed if you did. For all of you that decided against power doors that may be an additional reason to celebrate. However, this was more of an annoyance than a real problem (so far anyway). With NACs ports this will also probably not be an issue.

Note also: This is not an issue for at home level 2 charging unless you open the flap when not necessary.

Dealer told me that if the charging flap for DC charging breaks off, a replacement requires removing the entire charging plug.

Good to know. I had an instance since where it didn’t jam because the flap was seen. I’m thinking maybe the check isn’t made when you move the car for some reason. Strange…
