Albany, OR achieved! 15% battery upon arrival! Started Port Ludlow, WA @ 99%

Eugene is just barely out of reach - if i was alone i might’ve gone for it!

charging now! plug&charge worked - max rate 203 kW - 15% to 88% in 31 minutes!

still charging to about 95%

from previous stop it took 11% to get to eugene! we could’ve totally done it! oh well!

now charging at Medford, OR - good progress today - not optimal range - few good choices beyond medford that are in range!

would have preferred to stop a little later - but take the chargers where we can get them!

6 stalls - 5/6 occupied when i showed up - plug and charge worked! 180 kw max rate - super busy site but working well!

based on this road trip experience…
  • supercharger access would still be welcome
  • 250 miles in a Macan EV Turbo is easy -280 to 320 much much harder at 60+ mph highway speeds
    • car is a range monster at 55 mph or slower
  • Plug&charge is great! - I only had one hiccup
  • there are more ccs charging sites than 2-3 years ago - this trip is far easier but still requires planning
  • EA is improving but can still let you down! activation snafu's and "unavailable" chargers at various sites
  • 85% to 90% is 30 minutes or less from any starting point at a 150kw charger or more! I was _ALWAYS_ at 80% or more well before the end of the 30 min session…
  • PCM nav’s estimate is pretty accurate - i planned multiple segments to land at 5-9% at destination - always landed with 2-3% more than estimated at start - even going faster than speed limit!
  • i unplug @ 5% estimated destination! at that point you have enough to get back on the road
  • plug share is ESSENTIAL! To make sure where you are heading will actually function - so so many "bad" charging stops avoided by using plugshare to "vet" the potential charging locations…looking for status and recent check ins…
  • charging site integration into PCM nav is great - but it does not know about a lot of sites that are now open!
    • I would NEVER let the PCM nav plan my charging stops - it makes HORRIBLE decisions for where to charge - but it's nice to "find" chargers and then make your own call for where/when to stop
2300 miles with 7 total fast charging stops across 5 days - and two nights at hotel with tesla destination charging…

wife’s first road trip in macan - but not her first EV road trip - she’s happy

Glad the trip went well overall. Bummer about the chassis error, but hopefully that will get sorted soon...

As I was reading, I couldn't help but think of how much more interesting (is that the right word? Maybe stressful/suspenseful...?) it is to read about CCS road trips than Supercharger road trips.

Sample Supercharger road trip report would be like:

"Entered destination into NAV. Drove until the car told me to charge and guided me to a charger, plugged and charged, rinse, repeat. The end."

See?!? B O R I N G.

;)

thats exactly how it works. too bad that there are still some places in the world with no adequate infrastructure, too bad that tesla took all the subsidies to build it and now does not allow everyone to use it..

i'ts unclear how subsidized the North American network is/was…in some cases Tesla turned down gvot. funding because of various "requirements" they didn't want to comply with… (example a screen to show billing rate and a credit card reader for point-of-sale) - Tesla decided it would be most costly to retrofit their design/sties with those failure points vs. the money they would receive in funding…

Charging Costs:

Porsche Charing Service$16.80
Other Service$77.16
Total$93.96
Total Miles2250
Cost/mile$0.042/mile

Gas cost per gallon (today @ Costco) - $4.7599
Gallons @ 23 mpg in my Cayenne - 97.8 gallons
Total Cost to Road Trip the Cayenne - $465.64

total cost with out the included 30 minutes would've been $343.73 in fast charging costs

Yes, Tesla did receive government funding for its charging stations, specifically from the National Electric Vehicle Infrastructure (NEVI) program. The NEVI program is part of the larger Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act passed in 2021. Tesla has been a significant recipient of these funds, being the third largest recipient according to a dashboard run by transportation officials. However, the Biden administration's NEVI program, which Tesla benefited from, has been paused by the Trump administration.

from the article linked…

As of the time of publication, the funds are on track to support the build-out of 539 fast-charging ports across 95 Tesla Supercharger sites. The majority of these sites are located near refreshment stops—either a shopping center, convenience or grocery stores, hotels, or restaurants. Of these, only six Tesla stations are open so far, with 87 with their status as “conditionally awarded.”

About 55 stations are set to receive the so-called “Magic Dock” with CCS adapters as well for non-
the funds are being used to retrofit sites and there will be public access to t hose sites, but the funds were not provide to build the network as we know it today … there was limited govt. funding for the _EXISTING_ North American supercharger site - what govt. funding there is/was. was earmarked for enhancing existing sites for more general access…

I'll stand by my original assertion - Tesla built out the network largely with out public funds - the fact that they have received "some" funding is largely being used to provide public access to existing sites (as required by the funds)…

the network is mostly private and 95 sites is a small fraction of the North American supercharger network.
