Radar systems are pretty reliable, camera (LIDAR) not so much but are cheaper. Manufactures are trying to use software to analyze video to do things like collision avoidance and adaptive cruise but have not been that effective. Simple things like sun shining into a camera (driving into a sunset or sunrise) or a highly reflective surface will confuse them and they drop out to a safe mode (off). Its the nature of LIDAR in the real world.

Just saying that the systems could be better, but not as long as sensors more suitable for parking are being used for double duty..
Interesting. I am a layman on such matters. I always thought OEMs added Lidar to make them overall better vs. Radar only systems. Which does the Macan use?

Porsche uses both. Tesla uses a simplified Lidar camera system they call Tesla vision. It is relatively easy to fool with a road runner type picture of a road ahead. The radar sees it as an object while the Tesla doesn't.

Is the yellow following too closely part of the collision avoidance system? I have noticed it seems to come on more often post software update.

LIDAR was added to most RADAR systems years ago simply to reduce false collision positives. The Mercedes based system of 15 years ago used to warn me that a tree was about to jump out in front of me, after they added a camera, not so much. Not a big deal until they added automatic braking. Lost of complains about cars slamming on the brake for no reason. It is not perfect technology, but statistics say it helps most of the time.

Porsche uses RADARS in the Macan EV, one front facing and two rear side facing, plus LIDAR from the parking and lane assistant cameras. When the LIDAR gets confused, the system alerts you with these collision alert system limited or down warnings. Sometimes adaptive cruise keeps working, sometimes not. I think even if the system is in limited mode, you get the RADAR warnings, but non of the active avoidance stuff. Don't trust my memory on that.
