If you didn't 3D print the center armrest tray from this post https://www.macanevowners.com/forum/threads/custom-center-armrest-tray.18600/, then perhaps this could be of use as an alternative way of using that space.
I've used a Maxpedition Skinny pouch (https://www.maxpedition.com/products/skinny-pocket-organizer?variant=27932328529) to store a few items I'd like to have at hand, but not floating free in the bottomless depths of that storage box. This pouch is exactly tall enough to fill the whole height, but not so big that you can't also keep a few things outside the pouch towards the front of the storage box.
Attached to the cord, and kept outside the pouch, I have a small whistle and a doohicky to break the car window and cut the seatbelt in an emergency. These do not hinder the closing of the armrest. The pouch has a strap on the top to aid in pulling it out of the space.
