While parked at the Cumberland Home Depot in Atlanta thiefs almost stole my radar sensor and front camera. They were able to pry one side of the camera and snap off one side of the radar sensor. I must have come outside just in time to scare them off. The concerning thing is how easy they can be removed. They obviously knew what they wanted. Be advised that there may be a market for those parts! From now on, I will park in reverse and in a visible parking spot.

I just want everyone to be aware of this risk. It is unfortunate. I used to park at a mall, shopping center, grocery store, Home Depot, etc., without worrying about anything except not being to close to a car that could dent mine when opening the door or getting in and out of a parking spot. Now, I am paranoid about a thief stealing the camera or sensors. I now circle around until I find a spot in a trafficked or visible area or in close proximity to a surveillance camera.

Apparently, it is not an uncommon occurrence:

If your radar sensor was stolen, you are likely dealing with a stolen Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) front radar sensor. This is part of a major nationwide automotive theft trend where thieves pop out the front emblem or lower grille to steal these high-value components.
Because the part was stolen, your out-of-pocket costs or insurance claim process will look slightly different than a mechanical failure:

Total Expected Cost: $2,000 to $5,500+
Because thieves generally rip the sensor out, they often snip the wiring harness and break the plastic mounting brackets behind the grille, which adds extra parts and labor to the repair.
  • The Sensor: A brand new OEM Porsche ACC radar sensor costs between $3,500 and $4,500 retail.
  • The Damage: If the wiring pigtail connector or the bumper grille section was damaged during the rip-out, expect an additional $200 to $600 for repair wiring and new brackets.
  • Labor & Calibration: Re-wiring, physical installation, and mandatory ADAS calibration (using a PIWIS tool to sync the radar with your car) will run $600 to $1,200.

How to Handle the Replacement

1. File a Comprehensive Insurance Claim

Theft is covered under the Comprehensive section of your auto insurance policy (not Collision).
  • What you pay: You will only be responsible for your comprehensive deductible (typically $250, $500, or $1,000).
  • Action Item: File a police report immediately. Insurance companies require a police report number before they will approve a theft claim for high-end parts.

2. Alternative: Sourcing Pre-Owned Parts
If you have a high deductible or want to pay out of pocket to avoid an insurance claim, do not buy a brand-new sensor from the dealer.
  • You can find tested, pre-owned OEM Macan radar sensors on eBay or through European salvage yards for $400 to $900.
  • Bring the part to a specialized independent Porsche mechanic. They can wire it up and calibrate it for a fraction of the dealership's labor rate.
