ok I set this up and charged @ a local L2 ChargePoint station in my local area - here is what I learned…

Question: what is this?
Answer: June 2024 (yes almost a year ago) Porsche and Chargepoint announced Porsche Charging Service integration. The announcement was vague then, and now that we have the manifestation of what it means I would suggest we all collectively "yawn" 🥱 [opinion].

https://www.chargepoint.com/about/n..._nokeo4LiQsQYVLqURo33buULEOG3Ec0xQIwDk1nGTPI1
https://newsroom.porsche.com/en_US/..._chargepoint_into_charging_service-36491.html

Opinion: This was announced on June 13th, 2024 - almost 1 year ago today. It was vague then, and now that it's 'delivered' it barely warrants any notice. Announcing something like this and then taking almost an entire year before delivering the concrete goods, and then the delivery is a minor-win is simply disappointing. They should only engage in announcements such as this when they are ready to deliver the actual feature. Just more evidence of the weakness of Porsche's North American charging game.

Question: what does setup of a ChargePoint account in myPorsche app accomplish?
Answer: As a Porsche Charging Service customer you may now choose to use the myPorsche app to start/manage a ChargePoint charging session rather than having to have a separate account w/ChargePoint (and a separate app) - billing/activation will all take place via your existing Porsche Charging Service account (and it's associated billing process).

Question: Is there any 1 year included/free charging service associated with this?
Answer: As of today - no! The 1 year 'free' charging is not a Porsche Charging Service "thing". It is an agreement w/Electrify America and delivered via the Porsche Charging Service. As of now this appears only to be an app/account/billing consolidation for access to the ChargePoint network. But you will still be charged for charging sessions w/ChargePoint network.

Question: Does this allow me to use Plug&Charge w/ChargePoint chargers
Answer: No - the current Plug&charge implementation embedded in your Macan only supports EA in North America and can not support "multiple" charging networks
Answer #2: it wouldn't work anyways because ChargePoint cables are "locked" to the charging stall until they are released by activating a session - so you can't plug in until you've accomplished session activation - chicken meet egg!

Question: Was it easy to setup?
Asnwer: pretty easy - there is a "setup" process for ChargePoint account, but it's not a "real" charge point account - just a confirmation of billing/address information associated with you Porsche Account.

Question: is this an actual advantage?
Answer: maybe but for me personaly no - I already have a charge point account, and I can use the following methods to activate a session:
  • ChargePoint app
  • RFID charge point card - * works offline
  • my phone w/ChargePoint card in my digital Wallet - * works offline
  • my watch w/ChargePoint card in my digital Wallet - * works offline
  • Plugshare via account integration
  • tap2pay credit card @ the station? not sure about this one!!
  • and now my Porsche App
* - the RFID cards (chargepoint, NFC via Phone/Watch digital wallet) have a major advantage in they work with out any cell or wifi signal - they will function in more remote areas or areas with bad/non-existent wireless coverage - they are also "faster" and require less interaction to get the charging session activated!
Question: is the Porsche ChargePoint account associated with your existing ChargePoint account?
Answer: no - it appears just to "add" charge Point as an option to your North American Porsche charging services contract - there is no "binding/access" to any existing ChargePoint account

Question: is there any advantage to using the Porsche app to activate your charging session?
Answer: from a pure cost point of view - no - the session I activated was identical cost to what I would've paid per-kWh vs. using the chargepoint app directly. This may or may not remain true over time and is subject to any agreements between Porsche Cars North America and ChargePoint. Stay tuned to future press releases from either party to see if they choose to leverage their integration with spiffs or discounts. Based on the charging session I performed today the billed rate and idle fees where identical to the tariffs I would've paid if the session were activated via the ChargePoint app and my existing chargePoint account.

Question: My existing ChargePoint account has "connections" that allow me access to client/employer based "restricted" ChargePoint chargers. Can I use the Porsche integration w/ChargePoint to access these restricted ChargePoint network EV Chargers?
Answer: as of today - no! You still must maintain your own separate ChargePoint account with its associated "connections" for authorization/permission to use ChargePoint "restricted" EV chargers. [opinion] this renders this integration nearly pointless in this author's opinion since many employers use ChargePoint for parking lot EV charging and they require "connection" for authorization restrictions to existing employees- YMMV.

Question: I own a ChargePoint flex residential charger or access one periodically at family, friends, and some businesses. What does this do for access to those chargers and or their charging data/statistics?
Answer: Nothing - it does nothing and has nothing to do with ChargePoints L2 residential chargers.

Question: Do I now have access to charging stations I previously did not have the ability to use?
Answer: No. You simple now have the choice as to how to initiate and pay for charging session with the ChargePoint EV charging network. Previously you had to use the ChargePoint app (or any other mechanism ChargePoint allowed). With this integration you now have the choice of using ChargePoint app directly or myPorsche app w/Porsche charging service contract. This is simply an alternative activation mechanism. You've always been able to access and use these charging stations. But not via the myPorsche app's integrated charging support.

Summary: this is a "minor" win in my opinion in that you can now use the Porsche app to activate charging sessions for EA and Chargepoint- and have to have only one billing association for both networks - no separate account-name/password and common app based activation process for charging your Macan/Taycan
  • Launch the "myPorsch app"
  • tap "maps"
  • tap "charging"
  • find the charging station you're at - tap on it
  • click a few times on the screen and boom the ChargePoint station cord is unlocked and you plug in to charge now that the session has been activated via your Porsche Charging Service account.
if you do not want a separate EA and ChargePoint account and just want to have all your charging for these two networks billed to your Porsche Charging Service contract - this is the setup for you…

I rate this a "minor" win, but honestly managing the chargePoint accounts separately is no big deal, activation via RFID is faster, easier than having to use Porsche app (I can use my phone or watch) - *. And the Porsche app's "number of steps" for activating the session is far greater than the number of steps vs…
  • using the native ChargePoint app
  • by passing the app all together and just using one of my connected devices
Kudos to Porsche for doing this - but it's honestly a minor win and not a game changer - it's slightly easier if you don't want to manage two separate billing accounts and like using the Porsche app as your charge session manager.

my $0.02 YMMV
just had a thought…

ChargePoint has been around for a very long time and their business consists of a few "types of chargers"
  • public access commercial chargers: parks, businesses, hotels, malls, etc…
  • they residential offerings
  • they "host/install" EV chargers for other businesses (many companies in Silly-con valley have ChargePoint chargers installed in their parking lots for the employees)
it's the 3rd category of chargers from above that is interesting to me. EV chargers ChargePoint is running for "other companies". This are often time, but not always, restricted. i.e. to use my former's employers ChargePoint chargers I had to gain permission from ChargePoint/myEmployer - otherwise the charging station would not active - this restriction is obvious in it advantage in that companies with eV chargers for their employee's use/benefit are restricted to to their employees only vs. the general public.

based on Porsche's current level of charge point integration - i.e. not being able to associate with an existing ChargePoint account - there is no way for me as a Porsche Charging Service customer to request access to these "restricted" EV chargers that are part of the ChargePoint network…so I still need to maintain a separate 'real' chargePoint account for access to these restricted EV sites…

this in my opinion dramatically undermines the advantage of the "single" Porsche Account for charging…I was already "meh/yawn/who-cares" 🫤🥱 about this "integration" now I'm even less enthusiastic…

ChargePoint accounts have this feature as part of their "connections" account management - you can add/request/remove/see what "connections" you have for access to restricted/discounted/free EV charging…as of now I need no method of managing ChargePoint "connections" in relation to my Porsche Charging Service ChargePoint network access. So I still have to have my own separate ChargePoint account…yeah the more I think about this the more I think it's mostly pointless - and Porsche took a year to deliver something that doesn't matter.

I could see a future plug&charge capability in existing Macans, but maybe not with CP since they lock the cables before authorizing. In terms of how the Macan could work with multiple charge networks via Plug&Charge, one of either of the below could work:
1. They had the coming multi-network standard that is under development. I think this isn't too likely because of the lead time for implementing standards and I could see it requiring something the existing on-board charger equipment can't support.
2. They could allow installing multiple P&C profiles into the car, then selecting a profile based on location. "Oh, you're at an EA site, so activate EA profile," or "Now at an EVgo site, so activate that profile."

Both of these are pure speculation though.

my $0.02 YMMV
from Porsche's own Press release…emphasis mine…they only missed their original time line by about 1/2 year

and this change was not required to have access to all these chargers - you just had to have a free easy to setup chargepoint account…

The My Porsche app enables drivers to easily find, use and pay at charging stations. This partnership bolsters the existing integration with Electrify America, allowing both Porsche EV and PHEV customers to charge at ChargePoint and roaming partner charging stations via the My Porsche app. With this addition all Porsche Charging Service Customers will be able to charge at more than 75% of all J1772 and CCS1 charging ports across the United States. These additional charging stations will become available in Q4 2024.

For my own clarification- this is basically just ChargePoint integration into the My Porsche app right?

On my Volvo, the Volvo Cars phone app allows you to search for public chargers and activate them - this is in fact how the supercharger integration works, and interestingly enough that also occurs via a ChargePoint account. Don’t ask me why but it seems the Volvo Cars app uses ChargePoint to activate Tesla superchargers. It even says ChargePoint on the invoice!

I mention this because this ChargePoint integration may seem like a nothing-burger if you already have a ChargePoint account, but likely is a stepping stone for Porsche to eventually get supercharger access working as you’d likely activate them in the My Porsche app through this ChargePoint integration the same way.

^ And as a resident of California, may I just say that I envy your electric rates. We pay at least 50% more per kWh. And this in a state where everyone gets prodded to go electric...
For residential, In the summer 2025 it looks like it will be $ .0928 per kWh for the first 400, and $.1197 for anything above that. It drops about $.01 in fall.

I love how marketing takes something you already had and makes it sounds like a "win"
97,000 additional charging stations now available.
we already had (and continue to have) access to these 97,000 charging stations - no _NEW_ charging infrastructure is brought online by this change. The _ONLY_ difference is which app you can now use to activate a charging session.

We've always had access to these stations (and more Porsche does not yet cover) - but you had to activate them another way with a different app or directly at the station with a credit card.

the _ONLY_ thing this change makes is that you can now use your Porsche Charging Service contract and myPorsche app to activate and bill the session - but there is no NEW charging infrastructure we've been suddenly and magically granted access to…we've always been allowed to charge at these charging stalls…this is a giant nothing burger - they did not even negotiate a slightly better rate/discount - for the stations I've visited testing this locally the tariff rate for charging is identical to any rate I'd achieve directly using the ChargePoint app and my existing chargepoint Account.

If it was still employed by my previous employer and using their ChargePoint stations in their building parking lots I would _NOT_ be able to use Porsche's app to activate a charging session in my previous employers parking lots, because those are restricted access chargers that require "permission/authorization" from ChargePoint/Employer - this is because Porsche does not actually "connect" you to your existing ChargePoint account with it's restricted-authorizations…

so I actually have access to "fewer" chargePoint stations via Porsche Charging service than I do by using my ChargePoint account directly…

this is a largely pointless integration in my opinion.

I love how marketing takes something you already had and makes it sounds like a "win"

we already had (and continue to have) access to these 97,000 charging stations - no _NEW_ charging infrastructure is brought online by this change. The _ONLY_ difference is which app you can now use to activate a charging session.

We've always had access to these stations (and more Porsche does not yet cover) - but you had to activate them another way with a different app or directly at the station with a credit card.

the _ONLY_ thing this change makes is that you can now use your Porsche Charging Service contact and myPorsche app to activate and bill the session - but there is no NEW charging infrastructure we've been suddenly and magically granted access to…we've always been allowed to charge at these charging stalls…this is a giant nothing burger.
Yes and no.

Granted, “no _NEW_ charger was brought online” with this - but note they never said that, just 97k are now available via the My Porsche app (very first paragraph).

But if you’ve spent any serious time at chargers (EVGo, CP, EA, you name it), you must have realized that _WE_ are the minority.

Most new EV owners have no idea how chargers work. They don’t have every charging app like I - and maybe you - do, sometimes not even a single one.

I’ve helped countless people set up their phones, at the charging station, because they had borrowed X’s car, or it was a rental, or a company car, or just brand new or they just charge at home usually or…

This type of feature makes life much easier, especially for people _NOT_ familiar with EV. Exactly who _ALL_ the carmakers are going after.

Calling it a “giant nothing burger” is a little narrow minded - not everyone is as versed in the EV charging snafu as we are. ;)

I get that and even noted the "minor win" in my original FAQ posting - I just bristle at the notion of 97,000 chargers written to sound like they are "newly" available to EV owner's

I would've been more impressed if they integrated the charging session activation into the PCM main screen and I didn't need to use my phone at all - just tap on the charging station in my Porsche vehicle's nav and click "start charging" - that that would "integration" and a "win"

having to fumble with my phone and decide which of two app's to tap on is hardly a win in my book…but yeah some people are less informed than we are and this is one less thing they have to deal with - I get that - but I"ll still claim "nothing burger" given how superficially this is integrated

in car charging session activation via myPorsche ID and Porsche Charging contract - that would be a bit more compelling in my book - but I seriously doubt Porsche has the technical ability to do that level of software integratin - and all know they couldn't do an OTA update even if they did have it - so it would require a dealer visit to provide this "integration"…

I actually have access to fewer ChargePoint stations with this integration than I do with my personal ChargePoint account, because I can not access the 856 stations my previous silly-con valley employer had in their building parking lots all over silly-con valley for their employees - but they are restricted and require authorization "added" to my ChargePoint account - I see no way to accomplish that with this integration from Porsche. So I have access to fewer chargepoint stations with this integration that I previously had with my personal ChargePoint account - but again I get that's a minority…

yeah it's a win but only if you're barely aware of how anything works and can't figure out how to use a different app…

There is some truth to this, however maybe you missed my post above indicating that ChargePoint integration is most likely a stepping stone toward Tesla supercharger access.
